Spenard Builders Supply Purchases Polar Supply Company
Anchorage - Spenard Builders Supply (SBS), Alaska's largest building materials supplier and a member of the Pro-Build family of companies, announced today, the acquisition of Polar Supply Company, which operates out of distribution facilities in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Kenai. Polar Supply Company specializes in commercial grade structural, geotechnical, environmental and corrosion prevention products. Moving forward, Polar Supply will operate as a division of Spenard Builders Supply.
"Polar Supply Company has a great group of people who specialize in and understand the products required to build and maintain roads, bridges and pipelines," said Ed Waite, president of Spenard Builders Supply. "This acquisition adds important additional capabilities to our commercial product offerings."
Polar's three facilities will each operate as a separate division within Spenard, focusing on major commercial contractors, pipeline and oil companies. Plans are underway to re-locate Polar's Kenai operation to 13936 Spur Highway, adjacent to the SBS Kenai Millwork Center.
Don Dunavant, owner and founder of Polar Supply Company, will facilitate the transition before retiring. Dunavant grew Polar Supply from a one-man operation delivering materials out of his garage in 1986 to a three location chain with more than 40 employees.
"The combination of these two teams strengthens and diversifies both companies' product lines," said Dunavant. "The Polar team is very excited about the future opportunities given Alaska's forecast for the gas pipeline and industrial-related growth."

Spenard Builders Supply Purchases Arctic Builders Source
Anchorage - Spenard Builders Supply (SBS) continues to expand with the recent acquisition of Arctic Builders Source. Arctic Builders Source, which operates stores in Anchorage and Wasilla, Alaska, now will become part of Spenard Builders Supply.
“Arctic Builders Source has built a successful company on the principles of customer service and quality products for contractors,” said Ed Waite, President of SBS. “SBS shares these same principles including employing the best people in the industry and because of that we are pleased that Arctic Builders Source is joining the SBS family.”
The Anchorage location (Lake Otis) will operate much as they have in the past. They will cater to the needs of residential builders and retail customers and be identified as Spenard Builders Supply, Lake Otis branch. The Wasilla location (Bogard Road) will operate as a branch of Galco Building Products, a specialized (SBS) facility servicing applicator contractors, with an emphasis on vinyl siding, roofing, gypsum and insulation products. The Wasilla location will also facilitate internal distribution for the Mat-Su Valley Spenard Builders Supply branches.
Mark Habermann, original owner and founder of Arctic Builders Source Inc. will join Spenard Builders Supply and manage the Lake Otis branch. Habermann started Arctic Builders Source in 1991 as a one-man operation; delivering materials out of a blue Ford pick-up truck. “The acquisition of Arctic Builders Source by SBS needed to be a win-win-win situation – good for me and my family, our employees and Spenard Builders Supply. We achieved that goal and are confident that we will continue to offer our customers top notch service and value as Spenard Builders Supply.”
A division of Pro-Build, Inc., based in Denver, Colorado, Spenard Builders Supply is Alaska’s largest building materials supplier, operating 18 stores, four truss manufacturing facilities, one wall panel fabrication plant, four window and door shops and four distribution centers throughout the state, from Barrow to Sitka.

Spenard Builders Supply Purchases Curtis & Campbell/Wallcoverings North, Inc.
Anchorage - As Anchorage continues to grow, Alaska’s largest building materials supplier expands its presence in the community. Spenard Builders Supply (SBS) has purchased Curtis & Campbell, Inc. and Wallcoverings North, Inc. as a new division to be operated conjointly with SBS Design Center.
Curtis & Campbell and Wallcoverings North will continue to operate at their current location of 6239 B Street in Anchorage. The store offers flooring, paint, wall coverings, fabrics and hospitality design.
“Wallcoverings North is the only design center in Alaska that is open for decorators and clients to meet and select fabrics, wall coverings and fixtures,” said Ed Waite, president of SBS.
The Campbell family founded Curtis & Campbell in 1966 and Wallcoverings North in 1975. Brothers Dale and Bill Campbell have more than 28 years experience heading Curtis & Campbell while Sharon Campbell has led Wallcoverings North.

Spenard Builders Supply Awards Scholarship to Joseph Heimerl of Wasilla
Anchorage - AsSpenard Builders Supply (SBS) recently named Joseph Heimerl as the winner of its annual scholarship. A committee selected Heimerl from a pool of 32 qualified applicants.
As the winner of the Spenard Builders Supply scholarship, Heimerl will receive $3,000 to assist him in pursuing a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering. He will attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks with the ultimate goal of designing Alaska’s buildings, roads and bridges.
Heimerl was selected as the winner because of his vocational aptitude and desire to continue his studies in the field. He is an active participant in Skills USA competitions with awards in the drafting, welding and interview categories and has experience in the field as a concrete contractor aide and volunteer builder of a community hangar. Heimerl’s high school extracurricular activities include Business Professionals of America, Key Club and soccer.
SBS established its scholarship program in 1985 for the purpose of promoting further education and/or training for Alaska’s youth. According to Pat Anderson, SBS scholarship chair, Heirmerl was the natural winner. “Joseph Heimerl is a great example of how much potential Alaska’s youth possess. He identified a clear career goal and made positive steps toward achieving it. For this reason, we are proud to support him and eager to see just how much he can accomplish.”
SBS awards its scholarship once a year. Applications are available in the winter and are open to graduating Alaska seniors with a GPA of 2.6 or better. Students involved in vocational programs are especially encouraged to apply.

Spenard Builders Supply Grows with Mat-Su Borough
Anchorage - As the Matanuska-Susitna Borough population continues to grow, Alaska's largest building materials supplier expands its presence in the community. Spenard Builders Supply (SBS) recently acquired Pattison & Son's Overhead Doors as a new division to be known as Mat-Su Overhead Door.
Mat-Su Overhead Door is currently operating at the SBS Wasilla Millwork Center at 1700 West Parks Highway. A new facility for the division is being contructed adjacent to the Millwork Center and will open in July. The facility will be 6,600 square feet and will offer windows, doors, trim and garage doors.
Scott Pattison, owner and founder of Pattison & Son's Overhead Doors, will join Spenard Builders Supply and manage the new Mat-Su Overhead Door division. Pattison has been in the overhead door installation business for 22 years.

Spenard Builders Supply In Kodiak, Alaska Receives Industry's Highest Safety Award
Washington, DC - On October 1, 2005 Spenard Builders Supply in Kodiak, Alaska was presented the first annual award as the National Industry Leader in Safety by the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA). LoAnn Larson, Vice-President of Human Resources and Kriss Larsen, Branch Manager, accepted the award on behalf of Spenard Builders Supply during the 2005 NLBMDA/ProSales Industry Summit in Vancouver, British Columbia. Spenard Builders Supply was selected by a committee of safety experts as one of two lumber and building material dealers that demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to safety by exceeding basic safety practices and setting an example for the lumber and building material industry.
"Spenard Builders Supply in Kodiak, Alaska has a safety culture that was developed from the top down. Managers, supervisors and employees make a point to demonstrate safety is a priority by consistently discussing safety issues and recognizing food safety practices," said NLBMDA President Shawn Conrad. "A unique safety rewards and mentoring program, consistent policies and procedures and a basic philosophy that 'nothing we do is worth causing injury to anyone' has led them to outstanding safety results."
NLBMDA also announced the winners of the National Achievement in Safety Award. Spenard Builders Supply recipients are Barrow, Seward and Palmer. These stores represent some of the best examples of safety in the building materials industry.

Spenard Builders Supply Donates $5,000 to Anchorage Habitat for Humanity
Anchorage - Spenard Builders Supply and its parent company, Lanoga Corporation, have donated $5,000 in materials to Anchorage Habitat for Humanity.
"Anchorage families involved in the Habitat for Humanity program have been greatly served by Spenard Builders Supply's support over the years," said Terry Horton, executive director of Anchorage Habitat for Humanity. "Donations like this are what being a good corporate citizen is all about."

Spenard Builders Supply Golf Tournament Raises $5,000 for Fairbanks Habitat for Humanity
Fairbanks - Spenard Builders Supply's Third Annual Builders of Alaska Golf Tournament raised $5,000 for the Greater Fairbanks Area Habitat for Humanity.
"It is with efforts like Spenard Builders Supply's that Habitat for Humanity can continue its mission to provide a helping hand to families in our community," said Judy Dellinger, executive director of the Greater Fairbanks Area Habitat for Humanity.
The Third Annual Builders of Alaska Golf Tournament, held on June 14th at Chena Bend Golf Course, involved more than 90 participants form the Greater Fairbanks area.
